Karen E. Iles, PhD is the Director of the Office of the Conflict of Interest Review Board (OCIRB) and is an Associate Professor in Environmental Health Sciences. She graduated summa cum laude with an undergraduate degree in Arts and Science and Molecular Biology from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Iles received her PhD in Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Guelph and was awarded the Vaughan Medal by the University of Guelph Senate for outstanding contributions to University service. She also received a Young Investigator Award from The Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine for her PhD research.

After beginning a post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. Henry Forman in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and at the University of Southern California, she completed her post-doctoral studies with Dr. Forman at UAB. She joined the faculty of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences as an Instructor in 2003, after being awarded the Parker B. Francis Fellowship in Pulmonary Research and a grant from the American Heart Association. In 2006, she was recruited by the Department of Anesthesiology as an Assistant Professor as her primary appointment. Dr. Iles currently holds faculty appointments in the Schools of Public Health and Health Related Professionals at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
