UAB Occupational Therapy | Physical Therapy Diverse Student Recruitment Days

The May 20-21, 2021 virtual event was a success! Thank you to those that joined.

PT OT ImmersionOccupational Therapy and Physical Therapy are growing professions that provide vital services to patients and clients. Both professions struggle with assuring diversity in their workforce.

Studies have shown that when a professions lacks diversity, patients/clients from under-represented groups and/or marginalized communities are unlikely to be optimally served by that profession. To address this problem, the UAB Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Programs are interested in increasing the number of applicants from under-represented populations. For the purposes of this program, “under-represented populations” is defined as applicants who identify as Black, Hispanic, first generation to attend college, from rural communities, and low socioeconomic status.

The UAB Occupational Therapy / Physical Therapy Diverse Student Recruitment Days program is designed to increase the number of under-represented applicants exploring careers in occupational therapy and physical therapy by offering college sophomores, juniors and seniors - who identify as underrepresented - an additional opportunity to learn more about the UAB OT/PT Doctoral programs.

Future Event Dates and Details

In 2022, we hope to have a 2-day virtual event in February and another 2-day virtual event in June. Details will be announced here as soon as possible – likely by the middle of November 2021.

Topics addressed in the two-day virtual program will likely include career opportunities in OT and PT, program application tips, developing academic skills important for graduate school, plus, life in Birmingham and at UAB. Program goals will be accomplished through live presentations, small/large group activities and discussions with current UAB OT/PT students, staff and faculty.
