Faculty, staff, and students participate in professional, University, and community service activities across campus, Birmingham and the state of Alabama. Many of these programs collaborate with other programs, departments and schools within UAB.

The Adult Program of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham provides a variety of services for adults with disabilities with the goal of improving their independence. Typically, adult clients at UCP do not receive regular physical therapy services. To help with this need in our community, Dr. Jennifer Christy accompanies and supervises DPT students as they provide weekly physical therapy sessions. The students assess the needs of clients, and provide one on one interventions to improve their mobility. This service benefits not only the clients who receive physical therapy, but also the DPT students who have the opportunity to learn as they interact and work with these very special individuals.

ICDI YCDIUAB PT was the first in the state of Alabama to launch the national "I Can Do It, You Can Do It" (ICDI) program for health promotion for individuals with disabilities (pictured, right). The PT program has partnered with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition per the recommendation and encouragement of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Student Assembly. In year one, we worked exclusively with students at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind. In year two, the program expanded to include UCP and the Horizon School in addition to AIDB. More than 130 students from UAB's PT, Occupational Therapy (OT), Exercise Science, and Health Education programs worked together.

Students and faculty also participated in the first Physical Therapy Day of Service (PTDOS). The PTDOS was a global event where PT professionals and students around the world organized and carried out community service events. In 2015, the UAB PTDOS Team organized ninety students from across Alabama to volunteer in Birmingham. The volunteers helped the UAB Habitat House, AMBUCS, Wish 2 Enrich Tailgate, Spain Rehabilitation Center, the Ronald McDonald House, Red Barn therapeutic equestrian program, and Bingo at Fairhaven Nursing Home.
