Director of the Office of Interprofessional Simulation

Dr. Marjorie Lee White is Professor of Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine and Medical Education in the Schools of Medicine and Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. From 2008-2014 she was the Co-Medical Director of the Pediatric Simulation Center at Children’s of Alabama. She is currently Vice President for Clinical Simulation, UAB Medicine and Assistant Dean for Clinical Simulation, UAB School of Medicine and Director of the Office of Interprofessional Simulation for Innovative Clinical Practice.

Dawn Taylor Peterson, PhD


Director of Faculty Development & Training

Dawn Taylor Peterson is the Director of Faculty Development & Training for OIPS and an Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Medical Education and the School of Health Professions, Department of Health Services Administration.  She holds a PhD in Instructional Design, as well as an Educational Specialist degree and a Master of Arts in Education. She completed initial simulation training and the Advanced Comprehensive Instructor Course at the Center for Medical Simulation in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Peterson is also a TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer. Her primary interests are debriefing, interprofessional simulation, and faculty development for simulation.

April Belle, MSN, RN


Director of In Situ Simulations

April Belle is a Simulation Coordinator, Senior and The Director of In Situ Simulation for the Office of Interprofessional Simulation at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama. She is one of the simulation coordinators that services all hospital and clinic departments in the UAB Health System. She has been a Registered Nurse since 2004 and has experience in critical care, cardiac intensive care and on UAB’s Medical Emergency Team (MET). April graduated from The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa at The Capstone College of Nursing in 2004. After completing her Masters in Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and her Teaching Certificate in Nursing, April entered the world of simulation. She is a TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer and has completed the Center for Medical Simulation’s Simulation Instructor Course and Advanced Instructor Course. She is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the UAB School of Nursing.

Lisa Bergman, MSN, RN, CEN, CHSE


Director of Procedural Simulations

Lisa Bergman is a Simulation Coordinator Senior and Director of Procedural Simulation for The Office of Interprofessional Simulation at University of Alabama at Birmingham. She started her healthcare career in 1996 as a LPN and served in the United States Army in that capacity. She completed an associate’s degree RN program in 2002 and BSN / MSN at the University of Alabama in 2012. She has extensive clinical experience in emergency and critical care nursing, is a Certified Emergency Nurse, a Team STEPPS Master Trainer, a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, and completed the UAB Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Quality and Safety. Lisa’s simulation training includes completion of Sim Expert 2 Certification through the UAB OIPS Certification Plan, the Institute for Medical Simulation Instructor Course, and the Designing and Implementing Simulation-Based Mastery Learning Curricula Course at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Lisa is currently enrolled in the PhD in Health Education/Health Promotion at UAB.

Erin Blanchard, MSN, RN, CHSE


RN Simulation Educator, Senior

Erin Blanchard is a RN Simulation Educator for OIPS and the Associate Director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Simulation Program. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women (MUW) in 2009. Erin obtained a Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2016. She has previous experience in critical care and perioperative nursing, is a TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer, and is the Associate Course Director for the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesia (MOCA) program at UAB. Additionally, Erin is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator and her simulation training includes completion of the Sim Expert 3 Certification through the UAB OIPS Certification Plan, the Institute for Medical Simulation Basic and Advanced Instructor Courses, and Southern Illinois University’s course on Training and Using Standardized Patient for Teaching and Assessment. Erin is currently enrolled in a PhD program through the UAB School of Education in Health Education/Health Promotion.

Andres Viles MSN, RN, CNS 


Simulation Coordinator Senior 

Andres Viles is a simulation coordinator in the Office of Inter-professional Simulation. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing in December of 1999. Andres has extensive experience in emergency nursing and geriatrics.  After completing the Masters of Science in Nursing program at UAB as an Adult Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist in 2012, Andres successfully obtained his Acute/Clinical Care Nurse Specialist certification from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Andres has been active in simulation since 2009 and completed the Institute for Medical Simulation Instructor Course in 2012. Andres’ areas of interest are teamwork/communication, biosafety/emergency preparedness, and Resuscitation outcomes.

Shilpa Register, OD, PhD, MS

Director of Research

Dr. Shilpa J Register holds a PhD in Educational Policy and Leadership from the Ohio State University and Doctor of Optometry and Master of Science degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the UAB School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. She also serves as Director of Research for the UAB Office of Interprofessional Simulation. In 2016, she received a Certificate in Non Profit Management from Harvard Extension School and a Certificate in Health Disparities Research from UAB School of Medicine. She is a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. She serves on the Board of Directors for the UAB National Alumni Society and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Alabama.

Betty Farley, MSM


Administrative Director – Center for Interprofessional Education and Simulation (CIPES)

Betty Farley, has a Masters in Management and a Bachelors in Business Administration, and has been at UAB since February 2004. She began her career at UAB as an Administrative Associate in the School of Health Professions. In 2007, Betty was recruited to the School of Health Professions Dean’s Office as a Business Officer I for three departments within the school. Responsibilities for this position included budget oversight and support for the departments, a resource for UAB policies and procedures and assistance with human resource activities. June 2011, her position was reclassified to Business Officer II. Betty also provided support for department restructuring, infrastructure updates, and strategic initiatives.

Currently, Betty holds the position of Administrative Director in the Center for Interprofessional Education and Simulation which includes the Office of Interprofessional Simulation for Innovative Clinical Practice (OIPS), the Office of Interprofessional Curriculum (OIPC) and the Office of Standardized Patient Education (OSPE). Administrative and fiscal support services provided for the three offices. This support includes, but is not limited to, human resources, finance and budgeting and any activities related to completing the CIPES mission and vision.

Brian Mezzell, MBA


Communications Specialist

Brian Mezzell is the Communications Specialist for the Office of Interprofessional Simulation. He obtained his Master of Business Administration degree at UAB and his Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Berry College. Brian is responsible for the office’s data tracking and reporting. He also handles the office’s communications and many of the day-to-day administrative tasks. His interests are spending time with his wife and children, marketing, communications, and photography.

Kelly Markham, BS


Administrative Associate

Kelly Markham is the Administrative Associate for the Center for Interprofessional Education and Simulation which includes the Office of Interprofessional Simulation and the Office of Interprofessional Curriculum. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Business & Commerce with a major in Healthcare Management from the University of Alabama.   Her career began at UAB May 1, 2006 as an Office Services Specialist II for the Physician Assistant program in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, School of Health Professions. Due to added responsibilities and workload, this position was reclassified to Office Associate II in July 2010.  Those additional responsibilities included processing human resources documents and financial documents for the entire department.  Kelly transferred to OIPS November 2014 as an Administrative Associate.  Her role in OIPS includes scheduling for the director and the team, event management and processing financial documents.

Jenny Hayes

Program Administrator II

Jenny Hayes holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a minor in Social Work from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Jenny joined the team in 2019. She has held various positions throughout UAB Campus and UAB Medicine. Jenny is currently a participant in the UAB Geriatric Scholar Program. She also serves on the UAB Benevolent Fund Executive Council. Jenny plans to enroll in the Masters of Public Health program, with a focus on Healthcare Organization and Policy. Jenny’s primary role at OIPS is to provide administrative assistance to team members. Prior to coming to UAB Jenny served as the Operations Manager for several local non-profit organizations.

Manager - Clinical Simulation Operations - Audio Visual

Tyler Burks completed his Bachelor’s in Nuclear Medicine Technology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and concluded that training with becoming a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist. Prior to achieving his degree, he spent several years working with event planners to customize and support their audiovisual needs. His current position as Clinical Simulation Specialist puts into play his clinical knowledge combined with the audio visual skills to enhance simulation events for our learners.Tyler is currently enrolled at UAB in the MSIS Master’s program within the Collat School of Business with a core focus in IT Management.

Amanda Gargus, MSN

Clinical Coordinator

Amanda Gargus is a Clinical Coordinator for the Office of Interprofesssional Simulation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has been a Registered Nurse since 2007 and has experience in critical care, emergency, and cardiac nursing. She completed her BSN at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, GA. Amanda completed her MSN Informatics program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in August of 2017. Amanda’s goals are that her knowledge of nursing informatics will lead to improved quality and safety of patients’ care by being able to determine where issues in healthcare delivery are and finding innovative solutions through simulation.

Ben is a Clinical Simulation Specialist in the Office of Interprofessional Simulation. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Promotion, and a Master of Arts in Human Services with a concentration in Health and Wellness from Liberty University. Ben came to us from a medical school in Virginia and brought his experience of immersive and procedural simulation to Alabama. He’s excited to work with the team here and support the mission, vision, and values of the OIPS.

As a practicing visual artist for 30+ years with a Bachelor’s in the Fine Arts, my skill sets include most studio art disciplines such as painting, drawing, mold making and casting as well as digital disciplines such as graphic design and visual mediums including photography and videography.  As a simulationist with a studio art background, my challenge and passion is to increase the fidelity of scenarios in an effort to blur the line that separates simulation training and reality through innovation and application of various medical moulage techniques.

Teldra McCord holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering and a minor in Chemistry from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Teldra first joined the team in 2016 as a student worker, but now excels as a member of the OIPS Operations Team. Her goal is to provide technical support while supporting the simulation mission of improving patient care through appropriate use of simulation equipment and supplies.

In her role with the Office of Interprofessional Simulation for Innovative Clinical Practice, Shelby will be providing support to the administrative, operations, and programs teams to aide in the delivery of the department’s mission and values.

Ivory came to us from Central Sterile within UAB Hospital, and has a vast knowledge of medical equipment and surgical instrumentation. His goal is to provide technical support and he is excited to contribute to supporting the values and vision of the OIPS.

Alex Morton holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama. She has been a Registered Nurse since 2014 and has experience in pediatric and neonatal intensive care. Alex has joined the OIPS team to provide administrative and operational support with a focus on procedural simulation.
