Simulation News

Sim 1 is a half-day program that covers the fundamentals of simulation design from theory to practice, and immerses participants into active learning right from the start. Participants work in interprofessional teams as they learn about scenario design, effective debriefing, and ultimately experience the art of simulation from the learner’s perspective. There was never a dull moment and our group left Sim 1 eager to learn more and looking forward to Sim 2.

Sim 2 provides a full day experience focused on more advanced instruction in simulation design and guided debriefing. In my own Sim 2 experience, our group of learners were from a wide variety of clinical specialties and professional roles at UAB, with different levels of expertise in teaching and simulation. It was a great opportunity to meet people from across the UAB system and to work together as an IP team, designing an IP simulation experience from start to finish. Each person brought great ideas to the table as we designed, ran, and debriefed our own IP simulations.

Simulation can be challenging and requires learners to open themselves up to critique, reflection and learning new things about themselves. When this occurs in a positive learning environment, with a culture of mutual respect and a shared vision of improving patient care at UAB, it makes all the difference.  UAB is a great place for lifelong learning, and I highly recommend giving one of the OIPS courses a try.
