On January 31, 2020, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary declared a U.S. public health emergency to respond to 2019-nCoV.

In a discussion panel on February 7, Medical Director of Disease Control at the Jefferson County Department of Health, Wesley G. Willeford (an infectious disease physician) provided an Update on the 2019 Coronavirus. Jianming "James" Tang, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology (UAB Schools of Medicine and Public Health), presented "Racing against time to Save Health Workers in the 2019-nCoV Front Lines."
