Community Connections

The UAB School of Public Health is proud to partner with a variety of organizations and agencies across the state of Alabama serving the diverse needs of the LGBTQ population, these partnerships will only continue to grow and strengthen through the creation of this Endowed Fund. Examples include:

  • The 1917 Clinic: The mission of the 1917 Clinic is to address the needs of patients, their families and significant others, the scientific community, and the community-at-large in responding to the urgent and unique issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.
  • AIDS Alabama: AIDS Alabama devotes its energy and resources statewide to helping people with HIV/AIDS live healthy, independent lives and works to prevent the spread of HIV.
  • The Alliance for LGBTQ Equality:The Alliance is an employee-resource group of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), the UAB Health System (UABHS), the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (UAHSF), and the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital. It exists to provide advocacy, support, and networking for faculty and staff members of UAB's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Allies (LGBTQA) community. Membership is open to all such employees and retirees.
  • Birmingham Aids Outreach: The mission of BAO is to enhance the quality of life for people living with HIV / AIDS, at-risk, affected individuals, and the LGBTQ community through outreach, age-appropriate prevention education, and supportive services.
  • Free2Be: Free2Be supports a variety of youth, anti-violence, and advocacy services throughout Alabama. Our anti-Violence project, Free2Be Safe is unique in Alabama. We support LGBTQ survivors of violence and others that come to us for help. Your gifts make it possible for us to positively impact the lives of youth and adults that are struggling to find safety and acceptance.
  • The LGBTQ Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham: The mission of this Fund is to cultivate one community that supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning individuals and families with the belief that all people should be treated with equal respect and dignity in a welcoming and affirming community.   • The Magic City Acceptance Center: This organization provides a safe, supportive and affirming space for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning (LGBTQ) people and their allies in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Magic City Wellness Center: Birmingham Aids Outreach: The mission of BAO is to enhance the quality of life for people living with HIV / AIDS, at-risk, affected individuals, and the LGBTQ community through outreach, age-appropriate prevention education, and supportive services.
  • Medical Advocacy and Outreach: The goal of Medical Advocacy & Outreach (MAO) and its service divisions is to provide competent and compassionate care and assistance to individuals living with HIV, Hepatitis C, and other life-threatening illnesses. Whether you need HIV specialty and primary care, need help navigating public assistance programs, need support to manage life problems that are impacting your adherence to treatment, or just need understanding, MAO can work with you to make sure your needs are met.
  • OUTMemphis: Regardless of how we identify as individuals, we all seek a world where we can live openly, honestly and authentically. We desire a community that celebrates and respects us fully as a part of the whole. We expect and deserve to be as open about who we are and whom we love as we choose to be. Working to make that world a reality is what we do every day at OUTMemphis…in dozens of ways, in a hundred settings, and for thousands of clients and allies. Wherever you are on your journey to being fully and authentically who you are, whether you are fully OUT or not, OUTMemphis supports you!
  • SHAPE: SHAPE is a group of trained and knowledgeable college students and people living with HIV who provide sexual health workshops and outreach for youth and young adults with a focus on college students. Peer (college student) Educators are trained in prevention education about pregnancy, STIs/HIV, and healthy relationships.
  • SisterLove, Inc: SisterLove Inc. is on a mission to eradicate the adverse impact of HIV and other reproductive justice health challenges impacting women and their families through education, prevention, support, and human rights advocacy in the United States and around the world.
  • Thrive Alabama: Thrive Alabama empowers our patients to create a healthy community by providing compassionate, accessible, affordable, comprehensive care.
