UAB will open the Hub on Aug. 31 in The Hilton at UAB for children of faculty and staff who may be required to work on campus periodically and students who must attend in-person classes. The Hub will provide a supervised site that will enable several hundred children in grades K-8 to work independently on assignments. The Hub is staffed by UAB students who have been trained and background checked, and who are overseen by dedicated UAB staff. While children are at the Hub, they will be expected to work on virtual learning assignments, read, or enjoy activities they have brought from home like small puzzles or lego sets.

While at the Hub, children will be expected to follow all COVID-related safety precautions that apply to campus. These include but are not limited to: wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and frequent handwashing. Children will be assigned to work stations/tables that are designed to keep them 6 feet apart.

Parents will pay $15 per child per session, to help defray operational expenses, and subsidies are available depending on income. Two sessions will be offered each day, 8-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-4 p.m.; children may attend up to three sessions per week but are limited to one per day. Parents are expected to provide masks and devices or other study materials for their children, who may arrive or leave any time during a confirmed session.

Register online to reserve a space. Payment and a signed liability waiver are required before your child’s reservation is complete.
