School of Public Health News July 22, 2022

This is a high achievement as most members are asked to serve in non-consecutive terms and for only two years. Dr. Gartin has served two terms, or four years consecutively and will take on additional leadership in her upcoming third term.

Dr. Gartin was elected to serve as a co-chair for CUGH’s Subcommittee for Master's and Undergraduate Degrees in Global Health. This subcommittee promotes standards of excellence for coursework from undergraduate minors to bachelor’s degrees, and master’s to doctoral degrees in global health. The committee disseminates innovations in curriculum design, teaching, and experiential learning for global health at the undergraduate and master’s levels through publications and professional presentations. Dr. Gartin will share this leadership role with Dr. Marie Martin, Associate Director for Education and Training at the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) and Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy in the Vanderbilt School of Medicine (VUSM).

“Although CUGH does have representation from every continent,” Dr. Gartin explains, “working to increase global diversity in membership for this committee will be a top priority this year.” Having had such a diverse experience working with multiple institutions on their global health programs and in various international partnerships through these institutions, Dr. Gartin looks to expand the sub-committee’s global reach and representation of non-US and Canadian global health curriculum programs. “We [Gartin says about her and Martin, co-chairmanship] will also encourage our existing members to also reach out to their international partners as well to recruit more diverse perspectives in higher education and global health programming. Global health educational programming requires international and global input to ensure value and relevancy.”

Information about the subcommittee and their past products can be found on the programs webpage: Subcommittee on Master's and Undergraduate Degrees in Global Health - Consortium of Universities for Global Health (cugh.org).
