The mission of the UAB School of Public Health is to make positive and lasting change in the public’s health through the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service to the larger community, and we are proud to select four graduates from our school who are executing this mission daily in their professional careers.
The Early Career Achievement Alumni Award: This year’s recipient is Casey L. Daniel, MPH (UAB 2009), PhD (UAB 2013), Director of Epidemiology and Public Health and Assistant Professor at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute. Dr. Daniel is also the Chair of the Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Coalition. The Early Career Achievement Alumni Award recognizes excellence in public health for alumni who are younger in their careers.
The Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award: This year’s recipient is Flora van Leeuwen, MSPH (UAB 1983), PhD, Professor in the Department of Epidemiology in the Division of Psychosocial Research and Epidemiology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes a graduate who has shown a commitment to promoting health and preventing disease.
The Alumni/Alumna Award for Scientific Excellence: This year’s recipient is Sheree Boulet, DrPH (UAB 2005), MPH (UAB 2002), Assistant Professor in the Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics at the Emory University School of Medicine. The Alumna Award for Scientific Excellence is awarded to a graduate substantially involved in public health research and whose work reflects a commitment to improving population health.
The Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Award: This year’s recipient is Scott Harris, MD, MPH (UAB 2017), State Health Officer at the Alabama Department of Public Health. The Alumnus of the Year Award recognizes a graduate who embodies the School of Public Health's mission of promoting public health and preventing disease.
