A resolution that would increase meal costs at Full Moon Bar-B-Que in order to improve sustainability practices at UAB was proposed at the USGA senate meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

According to resolution FA-01-16, co-authored by Senators Asutosh Nanda and Siddharth Srikakolapu, Full Moon Bar-B-Que in the Hill Student Center has agreed to practice environmentally-conscious behavior by implementing the use of biodegradable containers in association with a 10 cent increase of all menu items, excluding drinks.

“If you ask anybody who wants to be more sustainable, or who hates products that aren’t reusable, they’ll tell you that styrofoam is the worst,” said USGA President Fernando Colunga.

Colunga said that biodegradable containers are three times more expensive than styrofoam, which is currently used at Full Moon. Due to this, the initial price increase proposed was 50 cents per menu item at Full Moon before it was negotiated down to 10 cents.

Full Moon was very receptive to the USGA’s request to use biodegradable containers, according to Colunga.

At the next formal senate meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27 the resolution will either be voted on or tabled to be voted on at a later date.

“Senators are going to go out and talk to their constituents, see how the student body feels, and then in two weeks we’ll revise it and bring it back,” Colunga said.

If the resolution is passed, the price increase and implementation of biodegradable containers should be expected one month from passage.
