Black Belt Adult Eye Care Clinic, June 14 2014
The University of Alabama at Birmingham Vision Science Research Center and School of Optometry would like you to share with us in honoring a true citizen of Pigeon Creek, Alabama. On Saturday, June 14, 2014 the UAB Black Belt Adult Eye Care team under the umbrella of UAB Vision Science Research Center and the School of Optometry will conduct our monthly Black Belt Adult Eye Care Clinic in Pigeon Creek Alabama from 9:00 am 2:00 pm. We will also take time to share in a birthday celebration and appreciation for Mr. Houston Everett. Mr. Everett will be ninety four years old on June 11th. Mr. Everett is a citizen of Pigeon Creek who three years ago asked the UAB Black Belt Adult Eye Care team to come to his community and conduct a vision clinic for the citizens of his community who have little access to eye care. The site was approved and Mr. Everett went to work in setting up a location, recruiting patients and even provided refreshments for the 50 patients that were examined. He stayed with the UAB team the entire day until we pulled out from the church at 6:00 pm that evening. This is certainly an act of servant hood and giving back to the community that we would like to celebrate.
The UAB Black Belt Adult Eye Care project under the Vision Science Research Center Education and Outreach Module and the UAB School of Optometry have provided comprehensive eye examinations in the Alabama Black Belt counties since 2001. Counties include Lowndes, Autauga, Montgomery, Bullock, Wilcox, Perry, Butler, Crenshaw, Lee, Sumter, Hale and Elmore, Alabama. The project is designed to make long-term impact by being a consistent and permanent community service that helps our fellow Alabamians, rather than being a limited fix. Support for this project is provide by the Eye Sight Foundation of Alabama, Pinnacle Optical, Frech Family Endowment, Mid-South RC& D and Lion Clubs International.
