Awarded Community Impact Grant
The UAB Benevolent Fund proudly announces Magic City Harvest as the recipient of its first Community Impact Grant.
Magic City Harvest recovers two million pounds of excess perishable food, distributing daily to people struggling to obtain sufficient nutritious food. Each week over 5,000 men, women and children are served by Magic City Harvest’s collaboration with 40 local nonprofit agencies. UAB employee contributions, through the Community Impact Grant, will purchase an 18’ refrigerated truck that will allow Magic City Harvest to distribute an additional 500,000 pounds of salvaged food annually.
The Community Impact Grant process allowed employees an opportunity to listen to unique and worthy proposals designed to address challenging community issues. Following brief educational presentations by three finalists on December 10, 2014, employees cast their votes to determine the grant recipient. We are proud that UAB employees engaged in the Community Impact Grant process, further directing their Benevolent Fund contributions. The Community Impact Grant concept was well received by employees and by our community, and we hope to offer similar opportunities in the future. This is one more way the Benevolent Fund gives UAB employees a chance to transorm our community and people's lives.
