About Us

A mark is an impression, a goal or target, a distinction. Making a mark suggests an activity, a process or experience. The “mark” and how it is made exemplifies what is taught, practiced and realized each day in our classrooms in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Being an art major will change your perspective about the world. As an art student at UAB you will learn to think critically and independently, delve into imagined worlds, and understand how others live and understand themselves. You will learn the skills and techniques needed to express yourself as a visual artist, practice the art of critique and study from great masters new and old.

The UAB Department of Art and Art History is committed to training artists and art historians to make a mark in the classroom, across campus, and throughout the community. We are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges.

At UAB you can pursue a variety of degree programs including a BFA in Studio Arts, a BA in Art History and Art Studio, an MA in Art History and an MA in Art Education.

As a student at UAB, you would be instructed by nationally and internationally active scholars and artists who promote creative inquiry, scholarship, and innovation. Our faculty not only emphasize, support and set high expectations for our students, but they foster the individual voices of our students and help them realize their potential.

Our commitment to our mission and our community is demonstrated by the synergy created through our community partnerships across Birmingham, a city rich with history, culture, and opportunity where you have access to an array of resources, opportunities, and partnerships unmatched anywhere else in the state of Alabama.

A vibrant Visiting Artist and Scholar series enhances our curriculum by bringing nationally and internationally renowned artists, scholars and designers to UAB for lectures, workshops, critiques and exhibitions. Our newly renovated studios, state-of-the-art digital labs, small class sizes, and wide variety of student exhibition and professional development programs provide students with a rich and diverse experience in the visual arts.

On this website you will find faculty bios, student portfolios, and descriptions of each of our academic and studio programs. You can also follow us @uabdaah on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

We would be happy to speak with you about how you can make your mark here at UAB. To schedule a personal tour or portfolio review, please contact Jared Ragland via email at raglandj@uab.edu or by phone at (205) 975-0693.
