Alan earned his MFA in “Scenic Design” from Northwestern University, his BFA in “Theater Design & Technology” from The University of Central Oklahoma and is a member of the United Scenic Artists Union Local 829.

Alan has been a Freelance Scenic Designer for Theater, Opera, and Performance across the country and internationally for over a decade. Regionally he has designed for The Steppenwolf Theater, The Goodman Theater, and The Chicago Shakespeare Theater (Chicago, IL); The Alliance Theater (Atlanta, GA), Arena Stage (Washington D.C.), Asolo Rep (Sarasota, FL), The Guthrie Theater (Minneapolis, MN), The Mark Taper Forum (Los Angeles, CA), and Portland Center Stage (Portland, OR). Internationally, Alan has served as a Conceptual Designer for multiple Live-Action Theme Park Productions (Beijing, China) and has been a Set Designer for two upcoming movies.

As an Associate Designer Alan has designed scenery for the 2nd Stage Theater on Broadway, Playwrights Horizons, and The Manhattan Theater Club Off-Broadway, and The Royal National Theater of Great Britain internationally. For four years Alan worked full-time as the Resident Design Assistant for The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Ashland, OR) and has served as a Draftsman for productions at the Metropolitan Opera (NYC).

Academically, Alan has had the opportunity to teach courses as a Visiting Professor at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), DePaul University (Chicago, IL), and Willamette University (Salem, OR). Additionally, Alan has also designed for multiple Theater Departments including Northwestern University, North Park University, Western Oregon University, and Willamette University.
