Applicants to the MSBME program should have earned a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, engineering, or a closely-related field. Students with undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences, life sciences, or mathematics will also be considered for admission; however, such students must demonstrate competence in engineering areas usually found in an undergraduate engineering curriculum. In some cases, preparatory courses in engineering may be required, with specific recommendations made by the BME Graduate Program Director.

Successful applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or higher. Scores on the GRE General Test will be accepted but are not required for the 2022-2023 academic year. International students should follow the UAB Graduate School's guidelines on English language proficiency.Brandon Sherrod works on a Scale-Metrix Wheelchair Scale project.
