Explore UAB

Tell us your story in six words: That’s what the UAB campus community was challenged to do for UAB Graduate School’s fifth annual Say It In 6 competition. Participants submitted an image and six words depicting any story they wanted to tell — about their life, their experiences, things they love or have learned. And the submissions were quite inspirational!

The Graduate School received more than 175 creative, moving entries from UAB students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty and staff. Images ranged from photographs to drawings and paintings that all complemented their six-word stories perfectly.

A preliminary judging panel comprised of local artists and community and business leaders picked the top two for each category in both the student and faculty/staff divisions, which was no easy task. The categories were Community, Balance, Curiosity, Motivation and Resilience. The first and second place winners were chosen by a final judging panel, which included Gwynne Mountz, UAB Office of the Provost; Greg Berry, UAB Assistant Director of Communications and Governmental Relations, Office of Alumni Affairs; Tyler Greer, Assistant Vice President Public Relations and Marketing, UAB University Relations; Lucine Carsen, ninth-grade photographer and writer at The Altamont School; Dan Carsen, teacher at The Altamont School and Director of The Altamont Heritage Panel; Stephanie Duncan, Community Outreach Manager for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Alabama; Joi Jackson, Communications and Events Specialist, UAB Honors College; and Cindy Kirk, Vice President of Educational Services, Alabama Public Television. The UAB community voted online to pick a People’s Choice winner. The top three student winners received cash prizes: $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for People’s Choice. The top three faculty/staff winners received gift baskets.

Finalists’ entries were displayed during a virtual awards ceremony March 30.
