Important Announcement

Fall 2020 Virtual Commencement Ceremonies are December 11 & 12!

What is a virtual ceremony? The ceremony will be a video compilation of messages from campus leaders, student government leaders, and clips from YOU, our graduates. The virtual graduate (masters and doctoral students) ceremony will air on Facebook, YouTube, and IGTV Friday, December 11, at 6:00 p.m. The virtual undergraduate ceremony will air on these channels on Saturday, December 12 at 9:30 a.m. Celebrate with our Virtual Commencement Kit!

For the virtual ceremonies, we would like you to upload a video of yourself in your cap and gown (or UAB gear) telling us who you are, what your major is, and for you to share something special about your time here at UAB! You can also congratulate fellow graduates. Of course, we ask that you do this from the comfort and safety of your own home. Please limit videos to 15 seconds, and record them vertically with no background music. Do note that all eligible graduates’ names will appear on screen even if they do not submit a video. To see examples of video submissions from past graduates, watch our virtual spring commencement celebrations on Facebook, YouTube, or IGTV.

Please send your entries via DM to @exploreuab on Instagram, or by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by November 13, 2020.

Here are a few questions and concerns you may have, answered below:

Will I have the option to walk in a future ceremony?

Yes. However, you will need to register to walk in the future ceremony. The form will be available for students to register to walk approximately 6 weeks prior to the future ceremony date. This will be done in the same way that students registered to walk previously under the "To-Do" list section of the applicable semester's ceremony.

If I am not able to walk in a future ceremony, can I get a refund on my regalia purchase?

Students who wish to receive a refund for SPRING regalia please e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Students will receive a response with instructions on how to process their return and receive their refund.

Can I still purchase a cap & gown?

Yes. Please visit

Will I still receive a program with my name, degree and hometown?

Yes. We are preparing a digital program (PDF) that will be made available online.

Will I still receive my diploma?

Yes. Diplomas are mailed out from the Registrar’s office 6-8 weeks after final grades are submitted (May 4). Please make sure that your mailing address is correct in BlazerNet. Do not use your temporary (on-campus or local address but your permanent address).

When I applied to graduate, I paid a $50 fee. Will this be refunded since the ceremony is now online?

No. The $50 fee paid when a student applies to graduate covers the cost of printing and shipping of your diploma, not your attendance at the commencement ceremony. You will still receive your diploma by mail.

Do I have to purchase a cap/gown to participate in the virtual commencement ceremony?

No, the purchase of a cap/gown is not required to participate in the virtual commencement ceremony. Many students choose to purchase their cap/gown so that they can wear it for their video submission. You may also choose to wear any kind of UAB spirit gear for your video submission.
