Welcome to the Heflin Center for Genomic Sciences

Welcome to the Heflin Center for Genomic Sciences (HCGS). The Heflin Center was founded in 2002 as a University Wide Interdisciplinary Research Center (UWIRC) with the goal of enhancing resources to enable UAB investigators to incorporate genetic and genomic approaches in their research.

Upcoming Events - Register online for upcoming events sponsored by the Heflin Center
Genomics Core Laboratories (GCL)
DNA The GCL provides Next Generation Sequence analysis, whole genome and targeted gene expression analysis, high- and low-throughput whole genome and custom genotyping, whole genome methylation analysis, and standard Sanger sequencing analysis to UAB investigators as well as individuals outside of the UAB system.

Section for Statistical Genetics (SSG)
gel The BSGP provides statistical, computational, bioinformatic, and epidemiological support to UAB investigators through education, original research and collaboration on biomedical research requiring statistical genetic support.
Proteomics
protein2 Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry (MS) has become an analytical technique that is vital to the research of both basic science and clinically-based investigators. The introduction of soft ionization techniques (electrospray ionization, ESI; matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization, MALDI) have transformed the application of MS.

Personalized Medicine
DNA_steth UAB Personalized Medicine is intended to serve as a centerpiece for development of an integrated research, educational, and clinical program. The major goals are to:implement genomic and proteomic tests for risk assessment, diagnosis, and pharmacogenetic analysis and provide decision-support tools at the point of care; strategically deploy whole genome sequencing approaches to gene discovery and diagnosis, paving the way towards routine use of genome sequencing in clinical care; provide education to clinicians and investigators on genomic and proteomic approaches in medicine; and monitor outcomes and conduct studies of efficacy and cost-effectiveness.
