JARAD ANDERSON, M.D.

HOMETOWN:
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Oklahoma
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center
BIO: I am originally from the small town of Cleveland, Oklahoma. I received my undergraduate degree in Chemical Biosciences from the University of Oklahoma and then completed medical school at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. I actually did not rotate at UAB or even visit Birmingham prior to matching here but after my interview, I knew UAB was exactly the place I wanted to be and where I wanted to receive my training. UAB has proved to be an excellent place to train and live. The comradery between residents and faculty is great. The high acuity, ever-increasing volume, wide range of pathology and early autonomy provides an excellent opportunity for rigorous training under the guidance of supportive faculty. I am truly grateful to have match at such a wonderful program that is known for providing excellent patient care. My EM interests include critical care, resuscitation and palliative medicine. Outside of the Emergency Department, I enjoy spending time outdoors with friends and playing the piano.

LOGAN BEACH, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Boring, OR
UNDERGRADUATE: BYU - Idaho
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of Utah
BIO: I grew up mostly in Oregon. I completed my undergrad in Idaho, medical school in Utah, and I'm excited to be completing residency here at UAB. I chose UAB partly for the same reasons most would say. On the interview trail every EM program talks about being a trifecta of academic, county, and community training that will prepare you for anything. In reality I feel like there are very few of those around the country, UAB being one of them. Once I got here as a visiting student I was beyond impressed by everyone’s skill, and the rate at which you see very complex, critically ill patients. More than that, though, the caliber of the staff here is unmatched. They are just a bunch of impossibly happy, kind, upbeat, patient people. They're passionate teachers and mentors. My family and I have loved being in Birmingham and are excited to take advantage of all it has to offer!

HOMETOWN: Augusta, GA
UNDERGRADUATE: Georgia College
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Medical College of Georgia, Athens Campus
BIO: I grew up in Augusta, Georgia. After high school I enrolled in a technical college and became a paramedic. I loved the work and the camaraderie and had the opportunity to work with some outstanding EM physicians. I continued working in EMS while earning my bachelor’s degree in Literature, which is where I met my wife, Destiny, before going to medical school at MCG in Athens. My interest in UAB always stemmed from its reputation for excellent clinical training and autonomy with passionate teachers, and I’m thrilled to be a member of this team. In our off time, my wife and I enjoy traveling, hiking, and hanging out with our two dogs.

JORDAN GAHAGAN, M.D.

HOMETOWN:
UNDERGRADUATE:
MEDICAL SCHOOL: LSU - Shreveport
BIO: Being born and raised in God’s Country (sometimes referred to as Louisiana) has shaped me into the person I am today. Ever since I was knee high to a duck I have spent most of my time either in a deer stand, a duck blind, a boat, or finding some other reason to be outside. I was able to fulfill my childhood dream of attending LSU where I double majored in Biological Sciences and Death Valley Communications (still don’t have a voice from yelling so much on Fall Saturday nights). After college and 3 of the poorest years of my life working as a scribe and EKG tech in a ER in Baton Rouge, I went to the frigid north for medical school. In Shreveport, I fell in love with Allie Desforges and we couples matched here at UAB for EM and Ortho (thanks for the early retirement plan, Allie!). UAB has been an incredible experience thus far. Every day I am pushed to be a better doctor clinically, procedurally, and compassionately. My favorite part of the program is that this residency has consistently recruited genuine people that I enjoy working with and spending time with outside of the hospital. When Allie and I aren’t working, we are spending time with our Goldendoodle Doc (I know, cliche name), cooking one of our favorite Cajun dishes, or enjoying a nice cold beverage at a local brewery.

JACK HARMON, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Montgomery, AL
UNDERGRADUATE: Auburn University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: The University of Alabama Heersink School of Medicine
BIO: I grew up in Montgomery, AL as one of five children. I attended Auburn University (War Eagle!) for undergrad, and meanwhile worked at a community hospital as a medical scribe on nights and weekends—which was the experience that helped me decide to apply to medical school. I took a year off after college and worked at a local doctor’s office, married my beautiful wife Lesli, and then began med school at UAB. I had the opportunity to return to Montgomery during my two clinical years on the Montgomery Regional Campus—and then was blessed to match back here at University Hospital in this awesome specialty! It is such a privilege to get to hear our patients’ stories and assist them in getting the help they need. I tried to keep an open mind on the interview trail, but in my opinion UAB delivered the best interview experience by far and solidified my decision to train here. I am convinced the faculty want nothing more than to see you grow and thrive, but also prioritize and support family/life outside the hospital. The residents are extremely approachable and fun to be around, and the experience so far has been phenomenal. When not at work, I enjoy freshwater fishing, taking walks in the neighborhood with my wife, frequenting local restaurants, and trying to piece together what my dog (Zeke) has been up to while I’m gone on shift.

HOMETOWN: Birmingham, AL
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Alabama
MEDICAL SCHOOL: UAB
BIO: I was born in Wisconsin but Birmingham is my hometown. I grew up walking the halls of UAB hospital following my father, a physician here at UAB. I've loved this town all my life. Watching "A Christmas Vacation" at Alabama theater, listening to blues at Gip's Place and celebrating my birthday at Skates 280. My life long friends and my family have stayed here together. I went to the glorious University of Alabama for undergrad, but finished with three graduate degrees at UAB including here at the Heersink School of Medicine. I met my amazing fiance, Meghan, a Samford graduate and local pharmacist. We are so excited for this new chapter in our lives and I feel a special pride in taking care of my hometown community. You can find us around town trying all the great restaurants and walking our three dogs.

HOMETOWN:
UNDERGRADUATE:
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of Mississippi
BIO: I grew up in the Jackson, MS metro area and went to undergrad at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. I completed a masters degree in biomedical sciences at Mississippi College prior to starting medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to train at an EM program like the one at UAB. The medical complexities and high-level of acuity in the UAB patients is unmatched. The residents, attendings, administrative staff, respiratory techs, nurses, pharmacists, and countless others are what make this program so special. My significant other, Santana, is an internal medicine resident at UMMC. When not at the hospital I am likely either spending time with Santana and our 3 dogs, mountain biking, watching soccer or football, going to concerts, or exploring new restaurants & breweries.

HELENA KONS, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Benicia, CA
UNDERGRADUATE: Texas Christian University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Texas Christian University
BIO: I grew up in the Bay Area in Northern California and went to Texas Christian University for undergrad and medical school. While doing my emergency medicine clerkship as a medical student, I had the opportunity to work with a recent graduate of the UAB emergency residency program and was so impressed by her I knew I had to check out UAB. When I arrived here for my away and saw how impressive all of the residents were and the acuity patients they were caring for, in addition to the camaraderie between everyone in the department, I was sold. I’m especially interested in ultrasound and am excited to be a part of a department with such strong ultrasound faculty! Outside of work I love going on hikes with my dog, visiting with friends and family, and staying active any way I can. I am so excited and blessed to call this place my home!
JARRED MILLARD, M.D.

JARRED MILLARD, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Burns, TN
UNDERGRADUATE: Middle Tennessee State University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University
BIO: I grew up in Burns, Tennessee, a small town west of Nashville. After high school, I had no plans to attend college. Instead, I pursued vocational training in emergency services and received certifications in structural firefighting, search and recovery diving, EMT, and paramedicine. I had the privilege of serving in various disaster areas during this training, and while working with a doctor in Haiti immediately after the 2010 earthquake, I knew I wanted to be a physician. That dream was delayed as I spent the next nine years working as a critical care ground and flight paramedic before beginning medical school. During this time, I met the most beautiful girl at an ugly sweater Christmas party and convinced her to marry me. Erika and I have been married for nearly nine years and have three amazing kiddos who keep us on our toes. Completing medical school as a family of 4 (and then 5!) was a wild adventure but one I wouldn't trade for the world! On my away rotation at UAB, I was immediately struck by the pride each resident, faculty, and staff member took in being a part of this institution. The emergency medicine program and UAB as a whole is marked by not only clinical excellence and innovation but also by warmth and collegiality, which is very important to me. During every shift that month I would sit next to experts in emergency medicine and watch them adeptly care for complex patients, all while treating everyone they encountered, myself included, like a friend. I am so excited to be a part of the UAB EM family and learn how to be a compassionate and clinically excellent emergency medicine physician from the same doctors I looked up to so much last year. I plan to remain involved with and give back to the EMS community that has meant so much to me, and I am very thankful for the opportunities at UAB to do just that. If I'm not on shift, I'm probably at one of the local YMCA pools with the family teaching my daughter to swim, building legos with my son, watching one of our favorite series with Erika, or making up crazy games with the kids.

WILLIAM MILLER, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Jackson, TN
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Alabama
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University
BIO: I grew up in Jackson, TN before attending the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!) then heading to East Tennessee to attend Quillen College of Medicine. I met my wife Marilyn during college, and I was lucky enough to convince her to move up to Johnson City with me. We got married during my third year of medical school. Since then we’ve added a pup named Nola (no connection to New Orleans) and have a baby boy on the way! I knew UAB is where I wanted to train as soon as I started my away rotation. You have the opportunity here to care for some of the sickest patients, work closely with world class faculty and residents, and learn from some of the leading experts in Emergency Medicine. Not to mention the incredible culture and sense of camaraderie that extends into every aspect of the program. When I’m not at work, you’ll find me traveling, grilling, exploring local restaurants, rewatching HBO’s Succession, or heading to Tuscaloosa for an Alabama football or basketball game.
SALLY PASSONS, M.D.

SALLY PASSONS, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Starkville, MS
UNDERGRADUATE: Mississippi State University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of Mississippi Medical Center
BIO: I was born and raised in Starkville, MS where I also attended Mississippi State University (Hail State!). I then went on to attend medical school in Jackson, MS at UMMC. My now husband, Brighton, and I met at MSU and started dating my first year of medical school. We had both been to Birmingham multiple times growing up visiting family. During my interview day and my second look, it was very apparent how much the residents and faculty were supportive of each other. This support and the complex patients seen at UAB every day made it feel like the perfect fit! During our free time, you can find us attending or watching MSU sports, having a good happy hour with friends, or driving down to the beach whenever we get the chance. We are so excited to start our next chapter here in Birmingham!
AHMED SAEED, M.D.

AHMED SAEED, M.D.

HOMETOWN: Birmingham, AL
UNDERGRADUATE: University of Alabama at Birmingham
MEDICAL SCHOOL: Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine
BIO: I grew up in the midst of duality, born and raised in Pakistan before immigrating to Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 14. Birmingham has been my home ever since, and it holds a special place in my heart. I pursued my undergraduate education at UAB, where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology. Additionally, I furthered my education by earning a master’s in biomedical science from Troy University. After college, I had the opportunity to work in EMS, this experience and my life journey taught me invaluable life lessons. It was from these experiences that I realized medicine is not solely about the science; it is about understanding the impact of circumstances, values, and beliefs on the provision and reception of healthcare. Witnessing the importance of physicians who could connect with patients on a personal level, empathizing with their struggles, fears, and how life challenges affect their health, left a profound impression on me. In this regard, the emergency department resonated deeply with me. It is a space where every patient can seek and access healthcare, regardless of their situation, and where they should be met with compassion and empathy from healthcare providers. I firmly believe that no institution embodies this level of care better than UAB, which is why I made the decision to return home and serve my community. I eagerly look forward to immersing myself in the dynamic environment of the emergency room, where every day brings unpredictability. It excites me to be at the forefront of providing immediate, hands-on care to individuals during their most vulnerable moments. The collaborative nature of the emergency department, combined with the continuous learning and skill refinement opportunities, inspires me to become a compassionate advocate for those in need. With an unwavering passion and a genuine desire to make a difference, I eagerly embrace the fast-paced challenges that lie ahead. I am thrilled to be part of a team that saves lives, one awe-inspiring moment at a time.

MADISON WILLIAMS CHEN, M.D.

HOMETOWN: North Canton, OH
UNDERGRADUATE: Belmont University
MEDICAL SCHOOL: University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville
BIO: I grew up in Northeast Ohio with a few years spent during elementary school in South Carolina. After high school, I moved to Nashville, TN to attend undergrad at Belmont University where I met my husband! I graduated from Belmont University with a major in Neuroscience and minor in Chemistry. Afterwards, I moved to Greenville, SC and spent a year working as a scribe and also as a Logistics Advisor for a pre-healthcare summer internship. My husband and I were married about a month before I started medical school, and enjoyed four more great years in Greenville. We were so excited and overwhelmed by the residency application process. Mostly, how to evaluate programs over virtual interviews. UAB’s program stood out in so many ways; I was excited about training at an academic center with high acuity patients, great opportunities for career development, early resident-autonomy. Most importantly, UAB’s sense of community between leadership, faculty, and residents was apparent on interview day and confirmed at my second look. We are now here in Birmingham and loving it! When I’m not working, you can find my husband and I playing tennis (poorly), biking, walking our dog Henry, or eating out at all the awesome restaurants in Birmingham.
