UAB's transplant program is one of the busiest in the nation, performing kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, lung, and uterus transplants, and is recognized by many to be the leader in research, education and patient care.  Since 1968, UAB's transplant services have performed more than 17,000 organ transplants with more than 400 organs each year, which ranks the program among the nation's leaders in the number of transplants performed and patient outcomes.

The Division of Transplantation's clinical program specializes in kidney, kidney/pancreas, and liver transplantation for adult and pediatric patients as well as hepatobiliary and dialysis access. The division has performed over 12,000 kidney and more than 3,400 liver transplants. The division completes approximately 90 hepatobiliary procedures annually, with an increasing proportion of them being minimally invasive.

The division offers an accredited two-year, clinical fellowship in kidney and liver transplantation as well as hepatobiliary surgery. General surgery residents from UAB participate in transplant service rotations in the second and fourth years of training.
