Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program builds upon our more than 15 advanced specialty tracks currently offered in the master’s program at UAB for nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and nurse administrators. The DNP is a practice-focused terminal degree to prepare graduates to practice at the highest level in specialty practice or to assume leadership positions in health care or nursing education.

About the DNP

Located in one of the world’s largest academic health centers, the DNP program at UAB offers countless opportunities to develop practice innovations locally and globally. Our graduates become health care executives, expert practice leaders, faculty and clinical research translators in hospital and community-based settings, many providing care with an emphasis on improving quality and access to underserved, diverse populations.

There are three components to our DNP program - advanced clinical specialty practice, leadership and practice inquiry.
Graduates will employ abilities and skills in these areas to advocate for reasonable, rational and data-driven health regulations, standards and evidence-based practices; sustain collaborative and strategic relationships; promote innovative, effective health-care programs; and form partnerships with diverse groups to address health disparities.

DNP students also have the opportunity to collaborate with their colleagues in the School's PhD program. The PhD in Nursing at UAB is the only such program in the state of Alabama and is designed to prepare nurses as researchers, scholars and leaders who make substantive contributions to the science of nursing.

The DNP program has been developed jointly by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing, the College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), and the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama, with UAB as the coordinating school.
