Congratulations to Ph.D. student and Graduate Assistant, Michelle Cardel and her mentor, Dr. Jose Fernandez. She has been chosen as a top finalist for the Obesity Society's Ethan Sims Young Investigator Award. This is an outstanding achievement, as almost 1,000 abstracts were submitted for review. She received high scores for her abstract, “Greater consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids are related to increased lean mass and decreased total and visceral adiposity in a racially diverse sample of children.” As a top five finalist, she will present her abstract at The Obesity Society’s Annual Scientific Meeting, September 20-24, 2012 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.
The Ethan Sims Young Investigator Award recognizes excellence in research by a young investigator based on the quality of the submitted abstract.

Congratulations to Dr. Jose Fernandez, Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Nutrition Sciences, for receiving the Joseph F. Volker Outstanding Faculty Award. The Joseph F. Volker Outstanding Faculty Award is the highest faculty award of the School of Health Professions. It acknowledges a faculty member who has demonstrated one or more of the following: An excellence in and dedication to teaching, distinctive research and other scholarly endeavors, and notable service to the School of Health Related Professions, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, or the community-at-large.
