Jose Fernandez, PhD, Associate Professor
I'm originally from Puerto Rico where I got my undergraduate degree at the University of Puerto Rico. I earned my Masters Degree from Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City and then my PhD from Penn State University. My specialty areas include behavior and population genetics and gene mapping techniques. I also study how genetics and ancestry affect obesity and diabetes in children and adults - especially in minority groups. As you can see, I also love decorating cakes - which is not something I get to do at work! I love making cakes for my friends' weddings! I also love wine, cooking, and talking about human nature and theology. Here's a fun fact about me: I used to teach salsa lessons at a bar in Pennsylvania for extra cash!
