42nd Annual Juried Student Exhibition

March 19 - April 6, 2018

The 42nd Annual Juried Student Exhibition features more than 80 works created by University of Alabama at Birmingham students and selected by guest juror Virginia Griswold.

Set to open Monday, March 19, the exhibition will run through April 6. The public reception is planned for 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 23, with awards and brief remarks by Griswold at 6 p.m. The exhibition is coordinated by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History, and presented in the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts galleries, 1221 10th Ave. South.

The Juried Student Exhibition is an experiential learning opportunity for the students of the DAAH. The show is open to all students currently enrolled in courses in the DAAH.

During her visit to UAB in February to judge the works, Griswold also held one-on-one studio visits with UAB BFA students.

Griswold is an artist based in Nashville. She received an MFA in sculpture/glass from Alfred University, Alfred, New York, in 2011 and a BFA in glass/material studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, in 2004. She has also studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Pilchuck Glass School and the Penland School of Crafts.

In 2009, she received a Brooklyn Arts Council Re-Grant to fund the project “What it is, What it will be: Objects Found and Altered in Brooklyn,” as well as a fellowship in sculpture from the New York Foundation for the Arts. In 2011, she was awarded a residency fellowship from Alfred University to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. She was an artist-in-residence at the Gullkistan Residency in Iceland.
