Angie Yang Calinsky was born and raised in Taiwan; she brings authentic language and cultural perspectives to her teaching. She has more than nine years of experience teaching Chinese to elementary, middle school, high school, and college students in face-to-face, online, and immersion settings.
Before joining UAB as a Credentialed Course Instructor, Angie served as a Mandarin instructor and curriculum designer for UAB’s STARTALK program. She also teaches Mandarin through ACCESS (Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide). From 2022 to 2024, she served as a Subject Matter Expert at the University of Alabama, where she helped develop the online courses in Mandarin Chinese I and II for ACCESS.
Angie believes that students learn in different ways and at different paces. Her teaching is grounded in differentiated instruction and meaningful communication, with an emphasis on helping students build confidence and connect classroom learning with real-life language use. She enjoys developing practical, student-centered learning experiences that integrate language, contemporary culture, and everyday life.
Her professional interests include Chinese language education, ESOL, differentiated instruction, curriculum development, and online language learning. Through her teaching and community involvement, she seeks to promote language learning, intercultural understanding, and appreciation of Chinese and Taiwanese culture
