In this talk, Dr. Kannampallil will describe the design, development, and implementation of AI-based clinical decision support tools in clinical settings. Specifically, he will discuss a range of EHR-integrated implementation considerations, evaluation strategies (including pragmatic clinical trials), and devising appropriate outcome measures.

The focus of this talk will be primarily on the challenges of health AI tools in clinical settings (especially academic medical centers), including the development of data pipelines, data issues, performance drift, governance approaches, and considerations for running pragmatic trials. Thomas Kannampallil is a Professor of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine, with appointments in the Departments of Medicine, Computer Science, and the Institute for Informatics, Data Science, and Biostatistics. He is also the Chief Data Scientist and an Assistant Dean for Data Science at WashU Medicine. His research interests lie at the intersection of computer science, cognitive science, and clinical informatics with a focus on the development and implementation of novel AI applications at the point-of-care and conducting pragmatic clinical trials. His research is currently funded by multiple R01s from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institute of Aging (NIA), and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). He currently serves as the Deputy Editor for the Journal of Biomedical Informatics (JBI); and is the the incoming editor-in-chief for the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), starting in 2027.
