A new article published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery highlights recommendations developed in part from the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) symposium, Breaking the Boundaries: Reimagining Research and Clinical Practice for a Healthier Tomorrow,” held June 9–10, 2025, in New Orleans.

Co-authored by Jennifer A. Croker, PhD, Senior Administrative Director of the CCTS and Associate Professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Medicine, and Timiya S. Nolan, PhD, APRN-CNP, ANP-BC, FAAN, Associate Director of Community Outreach and Engagement, O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and Associate Professor in the UAB Department of Medicine, the article explores how research, healthcare delivery, funding structures, and community partnerships can be redesigned to better address major health challenges across the Deep South.

The publication draws from conversations among leaders in research, health systems, community organizations, policy, and philanthropy, with recommendations focused on accelerating the movement of evidence into practice, strengthening rural research and care infrastructure, supporting cross-sector partnerships, and building sustainable models for improved health outcomes. The article reflects the continued momentum from Breaking the Boundaries and the CCTS Partner Network’s ongoing work to advance practical, collaborative solutions for the region.
