  • Community Based Participatory Research Immersion Training and Mentorship Program

Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is an evidence-based approach that fosters equitable partnerships between researchers and communities to find solutions to disparities within the community. CBPR supports research as well as program development. This intensive workshop provides participants with practical tools to engage communities as equal partners in research that drives meaningful, lasting change.

    Program Highlights

    • 4-day intensive training on principles and practice of CBPR
    • Ongoing 1:1 and group mentoring to support and guide you as you develop your research or healthcare program

    Gain Insights Into:

    • Privilege, disadvantage, and egalitarian relationships
    • Differences between CBPR and other research approaches
    • How to:
      • Partner with communities equally and respectfully
      • Establish and maintain trust
      • Partner with Community Advisory Groups to find community-based solutions
      • Develop programs based on community needs, preferences, and values
      • Listen to the voices of the community

What You Will Learn in the CBPR Training

The 4-day intensive training gives you a comprehensive foundation in the principles and practice of CBPR. During the training, you will take part in:

    • Interactive didactic sessions that introduce and reinforce core CBPR principles.
    • Small group, facilitated discussions led by CBPR experts, where you will actively apply CBPR concepts, share and refine project ideas, and explore opportunities for collaboration.
    • Presentations from experienced CBPR practitioners who lead research studies or community programs, sharing real-world insights into common challenges and practical strategies for addressing them.
    • Conversations with community partners who have collaborated with researchers, sharing why they participate in CBPR-based studies, how they and their communities benefit, and what meaningful, equitable partnerships look like from their perspective.

    What the Mentoring Program Offers

The training is followed by mentoring support if you are writing a community-engaged grant application, including:

    • Group mentoring with a CBPR expert and program alumni
    • Practical guidance on applying CBPR principles to your project or setting
    • Grant development support, with group or one-on-one mentoring for CBPR-focused proposals
