“Summer is the perfect time to refresh and reinforce healthy dental habits. I recommend brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and scheduling a dental check-up if one hasn't been done recently,” said Kyounga “Cecilia” Cheon, D.M.D., M.S.

Want to keep those summer smiles shining? Cheon shares her favorite tips to help kids snack smart, stay hydrated, and keep their teeth cavity-free.

Stay hydrated during summer activities

Whether kids are riding bikes, playing sports, roller-skating, or spending time outdoors, dehydration can happen quickly. Cheon, director of the UAB Dentistry Pediatric Dentistry clinic, says, “Water is the best option for staying hydrated, especially during regular play. For prolonged or intense activity, a low-sugar electrolyte drink may help restore fluid and ionic balance. Be sure to rinse with water afterward to help protect teeth.”

Balance a healthy diet for stronger teeth

A healthy diet plays a key role in oral health. Sugary and starchy snacks can increase the risk of tooth decay. Cheon notes, “Nutritious meals rich in calcium, protein, and vitamins support overall health and help maintain strong teeth, bones, and gums.”

Encourage kids to choose fruits, vegetables, cheese, and yogurt instead of chips, candy, and pastries. Lean proteins like grilled chicken or fish also provide important nutrients without added fats.

Be mindful of sticky snacks

Some healthy foods can still affect teeth. Bananas, for example, are nutritious but naturally high in sugar and soft enough to cling to teeth, which can weaken enamel over time. Cheon explains, “This doesn’t mean bananas should be avoided; they are best enjoyed with meals and followed by rinsing with water or brushing, if possible.”

Other sticky foods, such as dried fruits and chewy candies, can also increase the risk of cavities by sticking to enamel.

Pack smart, healthy snacks on the go

Pre-packing healthy snacks helps families avoid relying on vending machines and convenience foods like candy, cookies, and sugary drinks. When brushing isn’t possible, keeping a bottle of water handy can help rinse away food particles and reduce plaque acids. Packing a toothbrush and toothpaste is also a great option for longer outings.

Protect your child’s smile from sugar and acid

Frequent exposure to sugary and acidic foods and drinks, including sodas, citrus, and sour candies, can damage enamel and lead to tooth sensitivity. Coffee, tea, and sodas can also stain teeth over time.
Cheon adds, “Encouraging children to use a straw with acidic beverages and to rinse with water afterward can help reduce enamel exposure. Using fluoride toothpaste regularly plays an important role in strengthening enamel and minimizing sensitivity.”

These simple tips can help your child maintain a healthy summer routine and keep their smile bright all season.
