In 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice issued a major update to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This update requires all state and local government entities—including public universities like UAB—to make their digital content accessible by following the WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. UAB’s deadline for this compliance is April 24, 2026.
What is the standard?

How should we prioritize?
If content is posted online, or shared through a web platform or mobile app, it must meet accessibility requirements. Prioritize the information and experiences that are currently needed, used most often, or essential for participating in UAB services, programs, and activities.

Are there any exceptions?
- The ADA rule lists five exceptions, outlined on this page opens a new website, including some archived web content, old documents not currently being used, third-party content not shared on behalf of UAB, individualized, password-protected documents, and social media posts. These exceptions should be rarely used.
