All students participating in UAB-related international travel are subject to the UAB-Related International Travel Policy and must register their travel.
How to Register Your Travel: Non-High-Risk Locations
- Studying abroad for academic credit (including internship or practicum for credit)
- Complete an Education Abroad Application
- Traveling abroad as part of a UAB student organization, attending a conference, presenting or conducting research, etc.
- Complete an Education Abroad Pre-Departure Certification
- Complete a UAB-Related International Travel Registration form
- Review the information about student insurance coverage while abroad
- Receive confirmation of approved International Travel Registration before departure

Proposed UAB-related student international travel to any High-Risk Location must be reviewed by the UAB International Travel Risk Management Committee. The committee's review process is initiated when the student completes the high-risk travel registration. The review process typically takes approximately 3 weeks to complete. The committee reserves the right to deny requests for travel to such locations.
High-Risk Locations are defined as:
- All areas throughout a country with a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Travel Health NoticeLevel 3 (Warning) designation
- All areas throughout a country with a S. Department of State Travel AdvisoryLevel 3 (Reconsider travel) designation
- All areas throughout a country with a S. Department of State Travel AdvisoryLevel 4 (Do not travel) designation
- All areas identified as “Do not travel to” or “Reconsider travel” in a country with an overall S. Department of State Travel AdvisoryLevel 2 (Exercise increased caution) designation
Studying abroad for academic credit in a high-risk location (including internship or practicum for credit)
- If you would like to study abroad in a high-risk location, you must complete an Education Abroad Application for Non-Supported Programs in High-Risk Locations to be reviewed by the UAB International Travel Risk Management Committee. The review process is initiated when you, the student, complete this program application. The review process typically takes approximately 3 weeks to complete. The committee reserves the right to deny requests for travel to such locations.
Traveling abroad as part of a UAB student organization, attending a conference, presenting or conducting research, etc. in a high-risk location
- If you would like to travel abroad to a high-risk location as part of a UAB student organization or to attend a conference, present research, etc., you must first complete a Pre-Departure Certification for High-Risk Locations to be reviewed by the UAB International Travel Risk Management Committee. The review process is initiated when you, the student, complete this pre-departure certification. The review process typically takes approximately 3 weeks to complete. The UAB International Risk Management Committee reserves the right to deny requests for travel to such locations.
