    Start Rate

    Effective 01/02/2022, the start rate for PS107N1 Police Officer is $20.00 per hour.


    Shift Differential

    Effective 01/02/2022, the campus shift differential for Sworn Police Officers is $0.75 evening / $0.75 night. For more information on shift differentials, please see HR Policy 204 in the UAB Policies and Procedures Library.

  • Experience credit is the combination of related work experience and related education credit. Experience credit calculated for entry into the Police Hiring Grid is capped at 25 experience credits, however officers may continue to progress to grade max through the annual merit process.

    Work Experience: All sworn officer work experience will be counted 1 to 1 in years of service, rounded to the nearest month. One year and six months would calculate to 1.5 work experience credits. All other work experience will not be included in new hire pay decisions.

    Education: Education credit is added together with work credit to assess new hire, promotional and rehire base pay rate decisions according to the grid. Only degrees attained will be considered and partial credit will not be considered. This guideline does not imply entitlement to a pay increase for a current employee after attaining a higher level of education.

    • The minimum required degree for the job classification is counted as 0.
    • If the officer’s highest degree attained exceeds the minimum required degree, education credit will be given based on the table above.
    • If the officer’s highest degree attained is below the minimum required degree, education credit is subtracted based on the table above.


    Below are two examples of how the experience credit is calculated and applied to officers with different experience and education backgrounds:


    Candidate A: Police Officer Vacancy
    • Six (6) years and two (2) months of work experience (6.17)
    • High School Diploma (0)
    • Experience credit calculation: 6.17 + 0 = 6.17; rounded to 6.0 experience credits
    • Resulting pay rate is $23.75/ hour or $49,400 annually

    Candidate B: Police Officer Vacancy
    • One (1) year and nine (9) months of work experience (1.75)
    • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice (4)
    • Experience credit calculation: 1.75 + 4 = 5.75; rounded to 6.0 experience credits
    • Resulting pay rate is $23.75/ hour or $49,400 annually
