Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers with early detection and UAB is committed to raising awareness about screening on time. The American Cancer Society recommends that people 45 years or older at average risk of colorectal cancer start talking with their healthcare provider to see if screening is right for you.

  • 2020 80% in Every Community National Achievement Award: Grand Prize Winner

UAB was named the grand prize winner of the 2020 80% in Every Community National Achievement Award by the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable, founded by the American Cancer Society and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 80% in Every Community Award is given in recognition of distinguished, ongoing efforts to increase colorectal cancer screening rates nationwide.

In 2016, UAB Medicine and UAB Employee Wellness began partnering with the American Cancer Society to increase colorectal cancer screening and awareness among the university's 26,000 employees. These efforts led to the Love Your Bum, Get it Screened campaign, a creative and multifaceted campaign with screening events including an inflatable walk-through colon, lunch and learns with physician presentations, educational videos highlighting UAB leadership, contests, and screening and awareness messages on employee websites and social media. As a result, colorectal cancer screening among UAB employees enrolled in a medical plan has increased from 54 percent in 2014 to 68 percent in 2019.

SCOPY "Making CRC Awareness Fun" Award (2019 and 2020)

In 2019, UAB Employee Wellness received a SCOPY: Service Award for Colorectal Cancer Outreach, Prevention and Year-Round Excellence for the category, "Making CRC Awareness Fun" for the annual Love Your Bum, Get is Screened campaign. The SCOPY Awards are presented annually by the American College of Gastroenterology for efforts to promote colorectal cancer awareness.

Addressing the serious, and sometimes uncomfortable, topic of colorectal cancer screening, UAB embraced the challenge by putting a humorous spin on CRC awareness. The hallmark event for UAB’s campaign was the Colon on the Corner with Coffee event, which offered a free cup of coffee and included vendor tables, the inflatable colon and a toilet paper toss contest to win a monogrammed roll of toilet paper, hosted by Polly the Polyp.
