Mayors across Jefferson County are leading an effort to bring COVID-19 testing to their communities by partnering with Live HealthSmart Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Minority Health & Health Equity Research Center.

A key component, and element that will bring together many of its initiatives, is the Live HealthSmart Alabama app, which Dr. Rubin Pillay describes as the healthy-living equivalent of the Waze traffic app.

Take Down Tobacco Alabama

For the past 6 years, UAB and Children’s of Alabama (COA) has been the primary site for the Birmingham Youth Tobacco Prevention Program (YTPP). The YTTP is funded by the Alabama Department of Public Health with the goal of preventing youth tobacco use through school-based education to middle and high school students.

Kingston Ribbon Cutting

Live HealthSmart Alabama, a University of Alabama at Birmingham initiative, celebrated phase one improvements in the Kingston community at Stockham Park. These improvements are the culmination of a yearlong implementation project to improve the community’s infrastructure, including new and improved sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant street ramps, trees and flowers in Stockham Park, painted murals, new bus shelters, improved lighting in hard-to-see areas, and more.

Titusville Ribbon Cutting

Live HealthSmart Alabama, an initiative supported by the UAB Minority Health & Health Equity Research Center (MHERC), held a ribbon cutting at Titusville’s Memorial Park on September 20 to celebrate recent community improvements. This project started with the people of Titusville working together to make their neighborhood an even better place to live, work, study, and raise families.

Titusville Tree Planting

Live HealthSmart Alabama, a program of the UAB Minority Health & Health Equity Research Center, in partnership with Birmingham Sunrise Rotary Club, hosted a tree planting event in Titusville on November 9, 2020.

Titusville Community Mural

Live HealthSmart Alabama, in partnership with the Titusville Development Corporation, City of Birmingham, UAB Sustainable Smart Cities Research Center, and Blank Space, created an interactive mural to give the residents of Titusville a colorful new way to share what makes them special.
