The UAB Pain Treatment Clinic at UAB Hospital-Highlands provides consultative services related to acute and chronic pain management with an emphasis on the unique services that can be provided by pain fellowship-trained clinicians.

These include conventional therapies such as epidural steroid injections, joint and bursa injections, muscular trigger point injections, and peripheral nerve blocks. For patients with more severe or persistent pain, we offer advanced interventions such as spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation for patients who are candidates. Medical accupuncture is also available as a complementary and alternative treatment.

For all of our patients, we combine the safest and most effective therapeutic approaches with an emphasis on quality of life and the overall wellness of each individual. Our program de-emphasizes the use of opioid medications and strives to empower patients to improve their enjoyment of life by focusing on increasing daily exercise, better nutrition, and stress reduction through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness techniques. Our innovative research faculty in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine continues to advance the field of pain medicine with studies that explore new therapies and novel approaches.

We have a large established base of referring physicians from within the UAB Health System, as well as many outside community practices. Our division works closely in collaboration with the departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Orthopedics, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, and Palliative Care to provide comprehensive care for our patients.
