The UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center (UCDC) leadership is deeply saddened to share the loss of Nancy R. Gwaltney.

Ms. Gwaltney’s generosity directly impacted and accelerated diabetes research at the center and will continue to do so for many years to come. Notably, her family gift in 2010 became the Nancy R. and Eugene C. Gwaltney Family Endowed Chair in Juvenile Diabetes Research.

Ms. Gwaltney’s giving was inspired by a family member’s diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. The endowed chair allowed for the center to recruit Director Anath Shalev, M.D., a world-renowned leader in the field of diabetes research, who has now led the center for over a decade.

But, Ms. Gwaltney’s support of diabetes research at UAB did not begin in 2010. She gave faithfully and generously to UAB for almost 20 years. Continuous giving like Ms. Gwaltney’s has allowed the UCDC to train countless diabetes professionals, move closer to curative therapies, and expand knowledge within the field of diabetes research.

The UCDC will recognize Ms. Gwaltney and her dedication to the field of diabetes research at its upcoming unveiling of a new donor wall later in the year.

An individual plaque will be installed for Ms. Gwaltney on this honor wall at the heart of the center and its lab space. Around the plaque, scientists will meet to discuss new projects, researchers will conduct experiments, and students will meet with their mentors to learn how to take the next step in diabetes research. Shalev hopes that all will take a moment to remember the powerful legacy that Ms. Gwaltney leaves behind.

“It’s impossible to capture the incredible impact that Ms. Gwaltney has had on research efforts here at UAB,” said Shalev. “When a loved one is diagnosed with a chronic illness or disease, people are often unsure of what to do. Ms. Gwaltney loved those around her by taking action, and her legacy in giving will march on each day here at the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center,” said Shalev.

Those with condolences and memories are encouraged to post to this memory board. In lieu of flowers, the family of Ms. Gwaltney asks that supporters give to The UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center for juvenile research or to the UAB Amelia Staley Gwaltney Fund for Cystic Fibrosis Research.
