The Division of Emergency Medicine (EM) offers Global Health and International EM fellowship Initiatives, training in point-of-care ultrasound use in resource-limited settings, and a residency track in Global Health. Through these initiatives, academic fellowships have been founded, a refugee health clinic has been established, and curricula for national and international trainees have been created.
Faculty of the UAB School of Public Health, Sparkman Center of Global Health, and the Heersink School of Medicine are conducting research and global health practice initiatives in women’s and children’s health in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute, Aga Khan University-Nairobi, and the Nashulai Conservancy in Masai Mara. Dr. Janet Turan, Director of the Sparkman Center, has been working in Kenya for over 15 years.
Current research includes a randomized trial of an intervention to promote the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in pregnant couples, assessment of the impact of stigma on breast cancer patients, and the development of interventions to address mental health among pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV. Collaboration with the Nashulai Conservancy includes opportunities for UAB students to complete internships and collaboration on Global Health Case Competitions. Multiple UAB masters, doctoral, and other trainees have been and continue to be involved in research and practice projects in Kenya with these partners.
