The neurology clerkship is for UAB third-year medical students and lasts for four weeks. Orientation is the first Monday of the clerkship at which time service assignments, call schedule, and orientation manuals will be given detailing the program.

The clerkship is divided into two 2-week blocks, one outpatient and the other inpatient.  The inpatient block will be either on the General Neurology or Stroke Wards of University Hospital (UAB) Hospital, while the outpatient block will be done at either the Kirklin Clinic or the Birmingham Veterans (VA) Hospital.  Blocks will be randomly assigned, but exceptions can be made if a student plans to do a residency later in Neurology.

Each student will be responsible for four overnight calls over their 4-week neurology clerkship.  Calls will be divided into three weekday and one weekend call.

MedHub

Students are required to access MedHub and complete a clinical patient encounter log throughout the neurology clerkship.

Mid–block Evaluation

The purpose of the mid-block evaluation is to help students understand where their strengths and weaknesses are in relation to performance in the preceptor’s practice and on the clerkship. The mid-clerkship evaluation should be completed by the attending or senior resident at the end of block one and discussed with the student regarding progress and performance.

National Board of Medical Examiners (NBMEFinal Exam

At the end of the rotation, students will be required to pass the Neurology NBME Final Shelf Exam. The exam will be administered on the final Friday of the rotation.
