Our nephrologists and faculty are actively involved in training residents, pre- and post-doctoral fellow, and pipeline trainees to cultivate the next generation of renal physicians and scientists.
The UAB Division of Nephrology offers undergraduate, pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and clinical fellowships covering an extensive range of kidney physiology, conditions, diseases, and injury. These programs are led by award-winning attending physicians, scientists, and mentors committed to imparting their passion and expertise to our trainees.

Post-Doctoral Fellowships
The Division of Nephrology is home to a number of research-based PhD and MD/PhD fellows.
The Division aids in the leadership of the Deep South KUH PRIME (Kidney, Urology, and non-Malignant Hematology Premier Research - Interdisciplinary Mentored Education) training initiative. This program awards up to 7 post-doctoral TL1 fellowships annually to those from Augusta University, Tulane University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham conducting KUH research.
Pre-Doctoral Fellowships
Deep South KUH PRIME
Who: Current graduate students who have declared of a lab, and have defined a kidney, urology, and/or non-malignant hematology project
When: Typically during year 2 and 3 of graduate degree
Length of Program: 1-2 years

O'Brien Center Medical Student Research Program
This is an 8-10 week mentored research experience for medical students during the summer between the first and second year of medical school.
Funding for this program was made possible by a supplemental award from NIDDK to the O'Brien Center.
SING (Students Interested in Nephrology Group)
Medical students interested in pursuing opportunities for engagement in additional clinical and research exposure in the field of nephrology. Developed and led by medical students.

PROmoTE (PRedOctoral PhD & MD research training in TEams)
Who: Pre-matriculating MD and Pre-matriculating PhD students interested in kidney research
When: Summer before advanced education begins

GAp year INternship
The Gap Year Research Internships are designed for students who anticipate graduating or who have graduated with a Bachelor or Master degree and with the motivation to enroll in graduate and/or professional degree programs within the next 12-18 months, but need time to consider career options.
KURE (Kidney, Urology, and Hematology Undergraduate Research Experience)
Who: Undergraduate students in their final 2 years of undergraduate degree interested in kidney, urology, and hematology focused research
When: Summer
Length of Program: 8 weeks on campus (12 weeks total)

KDSAP - Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program
KDSAP is a student run organization for UAB Undergraduate students interested in participating in kidney-relevant training, service, and development.
UAB Kidney Club
Clinicians and research scientists in Nephrology will visit classrooms to talk about their research, clinical experience and science paths. Selected interested students will have the opportunity to be part of the UAB CORD program and perform summer research in one of our Division's biomedical research laboratories. Due to COVID-19, the classroom visits will be virtual until further notice.
Kidney Club is part of the science outreach and community engagement efforts of the UAB Division of Nephrology.
