  • Service Excellence Award for Outstanding Staff in the Department of OBGYN

The Department of OBGYN Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year selection process has been developed out of a desire to highlight the exceptional efforts of individuals working within the Department of OBGYN. Such individuals stand out among their peers not only for the successful execution of their work assignments, but also because of their dedication, creativity, and actions toward improving the atmosphere we all work in, and increasing the welfare of patients and fellow staff members and faculty.

The development of the selection process has created the need for a selection procedure executed by a Selection Committee. A selection Committee establishes the broad base of support necessary to engender, throughout the Department of OBGYN, participation in the Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year program. Through the Selection Committee, the program belongs to all members of the Department of OBGYN.

  • How to Nominate

Each month, any UAB or HSF employee of the department — staff, faculty, division directors, and administrators alike — can nominate a colleague for Employee of the Month. The form takes about a minute and requires no BlazerID or sign-in:

    • Nominations are open from the 7th through the 25th of each month. A nomination submitted after the 25th counts toward the following month.
    • The form's dropdown lists everyone currently eligible. Choose a name and tell us, in your own words, why they deserve recognition. Your words are what the selection committee reads, so specifics beat superlatives.
    • One nomination per person per month. Make it count.
    • You may not nominate yourself, and members of the Selection Committee and the ad hoc procedure committee may not submit nominations while serving.
    • A nomination stays in the running for three consecutive months; a nominee not selected right away is still considered in the next two cycles without being re-nominated.
  • Who Can Be Nominated
    • Regular-status UAB or HSF employees of the Department of OB/GYN with at least twelve months of continuous service with the department (UAB and HSF employment both count).
    • Faculty and senior management, including division directors and administrators, are not eligible.
    • Past Employees of the Month become eligible again twelve months after their selection.

Eligibility is independent of ethnicity, race, color, national origin, gender, gender expression, age, faith, religion, political affiliation, sexual orientation, physical appearance, disability, or veteran status.

  • How the Winner Is Chosen

The Selection Committee evaluates all nominations during the seven days following the close of the nomination period. Each member independently scores every nominee on a scale from 1 to 5, with all scores weighted equally. The nominee with the highest average score is selected as Employee of the Month. In the event of a tie, the committee makes the final decision, taking into account the overall level of support each nominee has received.

  • Awards
    • Employee of the Month: lapel pin, photograph, plaque, copies of their nominations, and a $100 gift card (reported as taxable income).
    • Employee of the Year: all the above and a $250 gift card (taxable income).

Recipients are notified in the last week of the preceding month, so they enjoy a full month of recognition. The awards are presented by the Chair of the Department of OBGYN, or the Executive Administrator or their designee, at a reception held in the recipient's honor, including a reading of the nomination(s) submitted on their behalf. A copy of the recipient's nominations is placed in their permanent departmental personnel file at the end of the month.
