Here at UAB our motto is, “work hard, play hard!”Although UAB is one of the top OB/GYN residency programs in the nation, many choose to train with us because of a strong sense of camaraderie among the residents. We truly enjoy each others’ company and make sure we have plenty of opportunities to get together!

After working through the transition months with residents and new interns, our social calendar starts out with the Intern Welcome Party. In years past, these parties have varied from going out to watch a Birmingham Barons' baseball game to a cozy wine tasting at one of our attendings' homes.

Weretreat09 then look forward to Resident Retreat, a time for bonding as well as problem-solving. The attendings and fellows cover all OB/GYN services for the weekend. It is truly a privilege for us to spend time together and have fun as a group. Past retreats have included trips to the beach, whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River, and getaways to Lake Martin.

As the year comes to an end, we have our annual Pre-Chiefs party at the home of one of our faculty members. The following weekend is our Chief’s party, a formal black tie affair to recognize our graduating chief residents and fellows.

In between all of these events, we have almost weekly social gatherings from Margarita Wednesdays to Liver Rounds on Friday afternoons. Also, we have monthly informal dinners with fellows and attendings to discuss various topics. Of course, among all the socializing and work we always have time for our personal lives. We have an excellent mix of married and single residents, and many residents have children. Residency can pose a challenge in balancing your career, social demands and life in general. Rest assured that here at UAB you will have the support and encouragement of not only the residents but also our faculty and staff.
