The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, under the leadership of Dr. Steven Theiss, with its 28 full-time clinical faculty and 8 clinical adjunct faculty, provides comprehensive patient care in eight subspecialty areas.

These services are conducted at UAB Highlands Hospital, University Hospital, and the Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, Childrens’ Hospital and the Sports Medicine Center, the Veterans Affairs Hospital and the Cooper-Green Outpatient Clinics.

The five-year residency program offers 30 resident positions with six at each level. One-year fellowships are available in hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, spine, traumatology and orthopaedic research. Research activities are conducted in each of the specialty areas. The residency program is fully accredited by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education.
