The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery prides itself on how our employees embody the mission and vision of UAB. Oftentimes, our employees "go the extra mile" to for their patients and colleagues. Below are many of our Ortho GEMs.

Debby Forester

Debby Forester

Debby Forester has been the backbone of the Ortho Trauma clinic for over 4 years now. She often sees very difficult and multiply-injured patients. She works very hard behind the scenes to coordinate postop care and to schedule patients for surgery. Her efforts often go unrecognized but the trauma service could not function without her.

Brittany Smith

Brittany Smith

Brittany Smith has been with UAB many years but most importantly with UAB Orthopaedic Surgery for 11 years. I have had the pleasure to work with Britt over my past 4.5 years here at UAB. I am so happy to call her my coworker/sister. Brittany is very compassionate and goes above and beyond with all her patients. She is a rock solid nurse and works very well with her surgeons, and I am certain they are both very happy to have someone like Brittany to work by their side. Brittany is so appreciated by everyone and I think she is most definitely a GEM! Brittany, thank you for your dedication to Ortho and please know you are appreciated by many and a blessing to all paths that you cross. I think nursing chooses us, we don't choose nursing; and nursing definitely chose a special person with Brittany!

Amy Blish

Amy Blish

Amy goes above and beyond in helping to care for our trauma patients. On top of helping us run our clinics smoothly, she spends countless hours on the phone and completing necessary but tedious paperwork, often after hours and on weekends. She would not ask for this recognition but she bears this heavy load with grace and resilience. We could not function without her steady hand helping us care for our patients.

Davita Hill

Davita Hill

Davida is always helpful in explaining the clinical reasoning behind many procedures and protocols to everyone. She is always willing to help others with her medical knowledge. I have learned a lot from her in my time here in Orthopedics. I definitely think Davida is a GEM to us all.

Andrea Boohaker, ACNP-BC

Andrea Boohaker, ACNP-BC

Andrea Boohaker should be highly recognized for all her efforts initiating and developing the APP program in the department. Because of her, there are APP's throughout the department that provide care for nonoperative and surgical patients which allows for improved access to care for patients. Andrea is hardworking, always available and cares for her coworkers. She is constantly checking in to make sure everyone has what they need and is willing to answer any question, no matter how busy she may be. She is an incredibly knowledgeable nurse practitioner and has vast experience in orthopedics, which makes her such an asset to the department. Andrea advocates for change to improve patient care and ensure employees can effectively perform their job duties. Even as she juggles many roles in the department, as well as going to school and caring for her three young children, she always takes time to teach and explain things to students and coworkers. I wanted to recognize Andrea for all the positive changes she has worked so hard for in the department and for being an excellent provider and coworker. You are appreciated, Andrea!

Sonya is very efficient and timely with her work. You won't often hear her complain even when work is overwhelming. She always has a positive response and takes ownership and pride in what she does. Sonya is most definitely a hero behind the scenes of Ortho.

Christy Acton

Christy Acton

Christy is Dr. Siegel’s Patient Services Coordinator and is AMAZING at what she does. On top of adjusting to a global pandemic, she cares for the most vulnerable patients - cancer patients. She goes after it, day after day with all her heart. You never have to worry if she’s calling a patient back or responding to email messages. She is also a wife and mother of three boys (one of whom is a Senior in high school). Having someone like Christy is rare and she deserves to be recognized, even though she would say she’s "just doing her job".
