The UAB Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program is committed to recruiting residents of diverse ethnic, racial, gender, sexual orientation, and religious backgrounds. The unique qualities of each resident are integral to the strength of our program and facilitate our efforts to cultivate a workforce that mirrors the diverse population that we serve. As a program, we oppose systemic racism and social injustice. Our faculty and residents are committed to listening, learning and engaging in active discussions about the roles bias and racism play in our everyday lives, work and the lives of our patients. We pledge to use our voices and actions to advocate and promote a culture of diversity, inclusion and equity within our residency program, hospital system and greater community.

Our Med-Program has several specific initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion in everything from recruitment to supporting our trainees of diverse backgrounds to curriculum and community engagement opportunities. These include but are not limited to:

  • Holistic application review of all applicants including blinded class rank and USMLE scores for interviewers and a shift to structured interviews per AAMC best practices in recruiting.

  • Regular meetings and collaboration amongst Med-Peds program leadership and Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Diversity Councils to ensure collaboration in building support structures spanning each of our residency programs

  • Dedicated curriculum around implicit bias, health disparities and DEI topics for all trainees and faculty

  • Involvement at the GME, departmental and national level in DEI and advocacy efforts.
