grateful patientAmy Knight, Ph.D., ABPP, recently received a lovely painting from a patient as an expression of gratitude.

Since July 2021, the patient has seen Dr. Knight for treatment of a functional neurologic disorder, triggered by a traumatic event. The patient has made great progress under the care of Dr. Knight and dedicated this beautiful artwork as an expression of her gratitude.

"Working with Dr. Knight has been amazing. I have a really hard time trusting and communicating with people, but somehow Dr. Knight hurdled over my walls. I generally, and genuinely, hate going to doctors – especially if it has anything to do with my mental health, but I can honestly say that not only have I never dreaded our appointments, I actually look forward to them." says the patient.

When asked if there was anything special she wanted to share about Dr. Knight, she responded "What I appreciate, or admire, most about Dr. Knight isn’t what she did for me, but really who she is. She appreciates the uniqueness of individuals and takes you on a sort of a self-discovering journey that sets aside who you are supposed to be, and embraces the real you; while also giving you the tools to take control of your disorder instead of your disorder controlling you. The power that gives back to you with a disorder that feels like it stole so much is truly indescribable and priceless."

Knight 250"I was so touched by this gift. I knew she had been painting as a way of focusing her creative energy and as a joyful activity. I often talk to my patients about seeking different ways to relax and accomplish self-care, including creative outlets to express themselves and their values. I knew she was working on this specific piece as it was coming together, and she included several themes that we had been discussing in therapy. After it was finished, she informed me that she realized that this piece was being painted "for me" as a reflection of the work we had done together. I especially appreciate how we can enjoy the process of creating something, as well as take joy in the gifting of our creations as an exercise in gratitude. She inspires me to think more about ways that I can express gratitude in my life." says Knight.
