Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine

UAB embodies a spirit of discovery that advances knowledge, solves real-world problems, and drives economic development.

This is as true in the specialized research programs within the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine as it is in any of UAB's other outstanding research programs. This division is continually engaged in novel, groundbreaking, and highly innovative research. Our research faculty ranks among the nation’s best funded and is noted for exceptional mentoring and training — from undergraduate researchers to post-doctoral fellows. Our research and education programs are supported by over $10 million in sponsored research funds each year.

Our division’s outstanding faculty members have been consistently ranked among the top programs for respiratory disease in nation by US News and World Report and Best Doctors in America. Locally, our contributions to medical student and resident education are recognized year after year as among the best in the department and the medical center.

Our clinical research programs participate in a number of national and international research networks including the NIH-funded COPD and Pulmonary Fibrosis Networks, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Therapeutics Development Network. Our partnerships with Southern Research Institute, the Center for Clinical Translational Science, the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, and the American Lung Association's Airways Clinical Research Centers Network has facilitated drug discovery and development in cystic fibrosis, COPD, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Additionally, an NIH T32 Training Program in Lung Biology and Translational Medicine capitalizes on the interdisciplinary and interactive environment at UAB.

The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine is constantly striving to make the next great breakthroughs in pulmonary medicine. To learn more about our ongoing research work, please explore the links provided.
