The 2023 Lowe Conference is scheduled for September 29 - October 1, 2023.

The Lowe Conference is an annual retreat for current and former fellows, and current faculty of the UAB Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. The event provides an informal venue in which participants present and discuss ongoing research and clinical care of rheumatic diseases. This conference is sponsored by the UAB Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology and by the UAB Division of Continuing Medical Education.

The Lowe Conference is supported by a contribution from Jane Knight Lowe, a longtime Huntsville, AL resident and civic leader who died in 1997, at the age of 95. Her relationship with UAB stemmed from the medical care she received from Gene V. Ball, MD, Jane Knight Lowe Professor of Medicine Emeritus.

Mrs. Lowe, who suffered from severe arthritis, established a professorship at UAB in 1986. Dr. Ball was the first recipient, and held the professorship until his retirement in 1997. By 2001, the Jane K. Lowe Foundation had contributed $1 million to complete funding for an endowed chair. Dr. Graciela Alarcón was named the holder of the Jane Knight Lowe Chair of Medicine. Dr. Kenneth Saag is the current Jane Knight Lowe Professor of Medicine in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. Funding from Mrs. Lowe also supports the Lowe Conference, which brings together current and former rheumatology fellows, and current faculty of the UAB Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology to present and discuss ongoing research and clinical care of rheumatic diseases. After 30 years, the Foundation will terminate and the assets of the Foundation will be distributed to the named charitable organizations. The Jane Knight Lowe Foundation is expected to distribute more than $20 million over its 30-year lifespan.
