A student performs a marimba during a concert rehearsal.Young musicians interested in percussion can participate in the summer percussion camp from June 23-27 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music, the camp is intended for rising eighth through 12th grade students and will feature group lessons, specialty sessions and master classes.
The UAB Summer Percussion Camp will provide a multitude of clinic topics through the week, including mallets, snare drum, timpani, drum set and accessory instruments, to also include percussion ensemble, steel band and drumline experience as deemed possible by the number of participants. A “show and tell” informal concert will be held at the end of the week at 4 p.m.
Any student may apply, regardless of what percussion instrument they feel most comfortable on: snare, mallets, drum set, etc. Although not necessary, it will be highly beneficial if the student has at least one year of school band experience or is familiar with the interpretation of music notation and had exposure to several different percussion instruments, says Professor Gene Fambrough, DMA, who will lead the camp.
The UAB Summer Percussion Camp will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and will include lunch each day. Camp cost is $275 if registered before June 6, and $300 beginning June 7. Registration deadline is June 15. Register. For more information, email
