Birmingham-based Protective Life Corporation and its parent company, Tokyo, Japan-based Dai-ichi Life Holdings, Inc., committed $3.5 million of gifts locally in 2015 when Dai-ichi acquired Protective. The Birmingham City Council passed an ordinance on Tuesday, Oct. 15, that establishes a non-smoking Health District on Birmingham’s Southside. Smoking will be prohibited on public property – including city streets and sidewalks within the Heath District.
